Is walking really ENOUGH to lose weight?
In short…?
…yes, absolutely! Is it the MOST effective form of exercise for weight loss? Well, this depends on your criteria for an effective workout!
If it is to achieve MAXIMUM calorie-burn, walking probably isn’t the method for you. Why? Because those typically more intense forms of cardio CRUSH walking in terms of calories.
Note: that’s unless you’re hiking up mountains of course!
However, if your criteria for a good workout is something you can do:
– sustainably
– with a low chance of injury
– with low fitness levels
– even when heavily overweight
– without needing a gym or paying any membership fees
…then perhaps walking is for you!!
I won’t lie, on paper, things like swimming, cycling, running, jumping rope, rowing, HIIT home workouts, team sports, martial arts and moderately intense weight training have greater potential in terms of calorie-burn.
You’d also have to do a whole bunch of walking to match the same calorie-burn you can achieve in a short, but more intense, workout. But, walking can be:
– a great place to start
– a substitute when you’re injured
– a good addition to more intense exercise
